“Ukrzaliznytsia creates special “women’s compartments”

“Ukrzaliznytsia is considering introducing women’s compartments. The company also consults with lawyers, international and Ukrainian NGOs.

“The safety of Ukrainians – regardless of gender – is our fundamental priority, especially during a full-scale war. Our railroaders have carefully studied the international experience, as women’s compartments or cars exist in some Asian countries and have been tested in Europe. We believe in a set of measures where panic buttons and alarms in compartments, video surveillance, increased patrolling and inevitable punishment for any proven harassment will play a key role in eradicating this phenomenon. Therefore, the current solution of the railroad is to help women feel more comfortable and safer through a set of measures, one of which will be a “pilot” with women’s compartments. We will test them for several months and decide on scaling up together with the community and experts. It will depend on real demand and feedback,” said the Chairman of the Board. The idea of launching separate compartments for women was also supported by Olena Shulyak, chairwoman of the Committee on the Organization of State Power, Local Self-Government, Regional Development and Urban Planning of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, chairwoman of the Servant of the People party:

“Creating separate compartments or cars for women on trains is an opportunity to provide comfort for those who need it. I will gladly help with the implementation of this idea, I am ready to work out the necessary changes to the rules of passenger transportation.”
