“There is a great lack of children’s content in Ukrainian”: Oleksandr Pedan on restricting the use of gadgets for his son

The host of the New Channel projects and the educational travel show “UniverCheck” shared why he set rules for 6-year-old Mark to use a tablet

Since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the views of any content produced in Russia have significantly decreased. Most Ukrainians have consciously refused to watch music, YouTube videos, and movies made in the aggressor country. At the same time, people started watching more Ukrainian YouTube, which has been significantly updated with cool new projects over the year of struggle. It’s a little more complicated with children and content for them. Oleksandr Pedan, the host of the New Channel projects and a public figure, spoke about this openly.

“I regret that because of the war, I had to allow my son to have both a tablet and games on it,” says the host of the YouTube project Pohlyad. “I recently put restrictions on Marik’s YouTube. He now has a maximum of an hour a day. And another 20 minutes for his two favorite games. I see that when he plays too much, he gets agitated and doesn’t sleep well at night. It’s the same with the content on the Internet, which is now very plentiful and of poor quality. It seems to me that this is such a Ukrainian pain – children’s content on YouTube. It is sorely lacking! I wish I had the energy and the ability to do it.”

The TV presenter says that the main problem is that his favorite children’s videos are not available in Ukrainian. This is simple children’s content like life hacks or streaming.

“I’m getting tired of taking away my child’s gadget. Unfortunately, it is impossible to completely disable or delete content in Russian on YouTube. I’m looking for ways to instill a love of the Ukrainian language in my son. The last thing we learned and even made a video for our Instagram story is the song “Fish with Cancer” from the movie “The Missing Letter”. It’s a fun song, and Mark learned it quickly.”
