How to behave in a restaurant: modern rules of etiquette

We all love going to restaurants, but can we say that every one of them can boast of perfect serving? What is it and how to eat food according to the rules of etiquette? Alice Levchenko, the founder of the art space Mrs. Alice Levchenko , talks about the modern rules of etiquette.

Serving food starts with a tablecloth

Just as in the theater, where a performance begins with a coat rack, food service begins with a tablecloth. The level of an establishment can be determined by the way its serving looks. If the tablecloth is clean and sterile, and there are no wrinkles or arrows on it, it means that the establishment has set the table properly.

Bread plate

The pie or bread plate should be placed to the left of the plate with the dish. If not, you can put the bread on a tablecloth. Bread should be eaten with your hands, breaking off a piece at a time, but do not stuff your mouth and do not open your mouth to the maximum. This is not only unethical, but also impolite.

Paper napkins

Paper napkins are not an indicator of the highest level of a restaurant. They are used in bistros and fast food restaurants. Textile napkins are an essential part of any table. They look more elegant and help create a luxurious atmosphere. Men place the napkin on their lap with the fold toward their body, while women do the opposite. This is done so that women can remove traces of makeup from their lips for comfortable eating.

About the plates

There should be no more than three plates on the table! The first plate is the base plate, which should not be used for food. It protects against spilled sauces and emphasizes the overall appearance of the dish.

Cutlery

If you are invited to a party where everything is thought out in advance, you will have several pairs of cutlery on your table. The fear of making a mistake with the choice of utensils disappears if you use a simple rule – start eating with the utensils closest to the edge of the table and move to the center.

As for forks and spoons, a fork is used on the left and a knife and spoon on the right. You shouldn’t eat with a fork like you would with a spoon. The tines of the cutlery should always face down. The basic rule of thumb for using a fork is that anything that can be pricked should be pricked (even a cutlet and olivier), and anything that can be scooped should be scooped (e.g., mashed potatoes).

This basic knowledge can be useful when visiting restaurants or formal parties. And if you want to decorate your table, serve festive dishes in a beautiful way, or simply surprise your loved one with an unusual breakfast, you can attend Alisa Levchenko’s master classes. One of these master classes will be held on March 7, 2023 within the framework of the Lady Boss Club which is open to members only.
