2022 was a very crucial year in the world. It brought several large-scale armed conflicts and diplomatic crises that affected the energy, food, economic and other spheres of development.

War in Ukraine

Around 5 am on February 24, Russia launched a full-scale offensive on the territory of Ukraine.

The expulsion of Russian troops from Chernihiv and Sumy regions, Mriya, liberation of Zmeinyi Island, bloody Bucha, battles for Azovstal and the strength of Mariupol, liberation of Kherson, grain deal, offensive operation in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, heavy losses among civilians and the army, destruction of energy infrastructure, but the invincibility of the Ukrainian spirit, people and President amazes the whole world.

Countries united to help Ukraine to bring it closer to victory and defend its independence: funding, weapons, equipment, assistance to civilians with shelter, etc.

According to a poll conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation in cooperation with the Razumkov Center sociological service, 93% of Ukrainians believe in Ukraine’s victory in the war. The majority (54%) of Ukrainians see victory in the expulsion of Russian troops from the entire territory of Ukraine and the restoration of the borders as of January 2014.

Obtaining the status of candidate for EU membership

On June 23, the leaders of 27 EU member states decided to grant Ukraine the status of candidate for EU membership. This opens up opportunities for financial assistance, improvement of the legal system and economy on the way to EU membership.

“The EU’s openness to further steps significantly mobilizes our domestic political resources for the complete transformation of the country in all spheres – from judicial to environmental. By the end of 2022, we plan to implement the recommendations of the European Commission, and in 2023 we expect to start negotiations on enlargement”, – Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.

Ukraine’s victory at Eurovision

On May 15, the final of the 66th Eurovision Song Contest took place in Turin, where representatives of 25 countries competed. The Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra won with the song Stefania.

The most important element of their number was the end, when Oleg Psyuk exclaimed:

“I want to ask you all. Please help Ukrainian Mariupol. Help Azovstal. Now!”.

This made an impression on Europeans: Google searches about the war in Ukraine and Mariupol have sharply increased.

Due to Russian aggression, next year the competition will be held in the UK on behalf of Ukraine. Ukraine will be represented by the band TVORCHI.

FIFA World Cup 2022

On December 8, 2022, the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup was held in Qatar. Argentina defeated France in a penalty shootout (4:2) and became world champions for the third time in history.

For the captain, 35-year-old Lionel Messi, this is the first world title. Messi also set a record for the number of matches played at the World Cup.

Twitter and Elon Musk

SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk closed the deal to acquire Twitter for $44 billion and took over the company.

“The reason I am buying Twitter is because it is important for the future of civilization to have a common digital platform where a wide range of opinions can be discussed in a healthy manner without resorting to violence,” Musk said.

Istanbul Convention

On June 20, 2022, the Verkhovna Rada ratified the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, known as the Istanbul Convention. Ukraine signed this document 11 years ago. This is the first such document that legally obliges to create a legal framework to combat violence against women.

Death of Elizabeth II

On September 8, Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom, who spent 70 years on the throne, died at the age of 96 in Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The Queen’s biographer Giles Brandreth wrote in his book that Elizabeth II died after fighting bone marrow cancer.
