Health insurance in Canada: how to get it

Canada has accepted over 230 thousand Ukrainian citizens seeking refuge from the war. Refugees have been able to use medical services in this country, but this process has its differences.

One of the key documents is health insurance. Health Insurance Card – a state health insurance card. This document makes it possible to receive about 70% of medical services free of charge. Each card must include the holder’s photo, signature, insurance number, and residential address.

The card is issued to every family member, including even small children. It is advisable to take out this insurance as soon as possible after your arrival in Canada. To do this, you should contact the organization that issues such cards in the province where you have settled.

State health insurance allows you to visit a family doctor and receive medical care at any hospital in Canada. Most services are free for the patient and billed to the state. Government funding includes:

  • consultations with family doctors and specialists;
  • diagnostics;
  • inpatient treatment;
  • emergency medical care;
  • vaccination;
  • most surgeries (including appendicitis, tumor removal, etc.);
  • pregnancy and childbirth.

You will have to pay separately for the services of a dentist (except for emergency surgery), ophthalmologist, psychologist, cosmetologist, rehabilitation therapist, physiotherapist, etc.
