China supports UN resolution for the first time

ChinaFor the first time since February 24, 2022, the Chinese UN delegation voted in favor of a General Assembly resolution naming Russia as the aggressor in the war against Ukraine. This choice was quite unexpected, as China had previously abstained from voting on such resolutions. India and Brazil also voted in favor of the resolution.

The results of the vote were announced by Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, on his microblog  Twitter.

“The General Assembly adopted a resolution on cooperation between the UN and the Council of Europe with 122 votes in favor and 5 votes against. Russia’s attempt to remove the reference to aggression against Ukraine failed,” he added.

Representatives of five countries – the Russian Federation, Belarus, Nicaragua, Syria, and the DPRK – voted against the resolution. In total, only 18 states abstained from voting. The draft resolution was prepared by 48 countries.

Earlier, China had refrained from criticizing Moscow’s actions, emphasizing the need to achieve peace with all parties’ interests in mind.
