The woman has been making traditional tattoos for more than 90 years, which have been used by the locals throughout Kalinga’s history as a symbol of beauty, strength, and courage. She doesn’t use modern machines or paint and draws on the body with a bamboo stick, thorns of the calamansi tree, water, and ash.
During her life, Apo performed a large number of traditional Filipino tattoos, where her clients were mostly women. Today, the 106-year-old craftswoman passes on all the intricacies of the craft to her niece, 26-year-old Grace.
