The COVID-19 pandemic may end in 2023: WHO

WHO Director-General Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus made a statement at the ceremony of awarding the Prize for Contribution to Health that the COVID-19 pandemic could end in 2023. 

“For the first time, the weekly number of registered deaths is lower than three years ago, when we first used the word ‘pandemic’. The improvement is significant. I am confident that at some point this year we will be able to say that COVID-19 is over as a public health emergency of international concern and as a pandemic,” said Gebreyesus.

The WHO Director-General also emphasized that we should all learn the lessons of the pandemic. The first is the importance of public health. The second lesson is the importance of science, and the third is the importance of cooperation.
