Natalia Moseychuk burst into tears during an interview with Svyatoslav Vakarchuk

1+1 presenter Natalia Moseychuk could not hold back her tears during the interview with the leader of the band “Okean Elzy” Svyatoslav Vakarchuk. She was touched by the story of a seriously wounded soldier, which the musician shared. Vakarchuk noted that this story could be used to make a short film.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the musician is actively engaged in volunteer activities. Together with his team he travels to hot spots to support Ukrainian defenders. When I was studying at the university, I took the course “Sociology and psychological struggle” at the military department. So the military commissariat told him to provide psychological assistance to defenders at the front.

About the wounded soldier

The meeting with the wounded soldier took place in Mykolaiv hospital in early March. Mykolaiv was then a frontline city, and there were fierce battles on the outskirts. Vakarchuk came to support the soldiers, to raise their morale. After the ward with moderately wounded soldiers, the doctor asked to go to the intensive care unit where three seriously wounded soldiers were lying. These guys are fearless heroes who by the will of fate found themselves in a hospital bed and now had to fight for their own lives. Two were stabilized, and one is still in a very serious condition.

“That guy has a barotrauma – a concrete slab fell on him. He was almost in a coma. His mother was sitting next to him. The doctor did not give a positive prognosis then. I approached the mother and asked permission to take the boy’s hand. I take his hand, he opens one eye, sees me and barely squeezes my fingers. All this looked quite dramatic, I was also in tears then”, – Vakarchuk recalls.

About a month later, in early April, Vakarchuk returned to the hospital. This guy is still in intensive care, his condition is stable, but the doctor still does not give any comforting prognosis.

“He smiled at me then, I sat next to him, we talked a little,” – Sviatoslav says .

The musician came to this hospital for the third time in early June.

“I was walking and saw this guy coming towards me. I’m happy, I start smiling, we hugged. And he says to me: “This is some kind of fate that we are meeting”. Sometimes this is how energies work. I do not know whether he has fully rehabilitated, but he is back on his feet and will continue to live. A man who was not given any predictions. This is some kind of miracle. I do not exaggerate my role in any way. It’s all doctors, genetics and God. But the feeling that he then clung to you… But after that, believe me, I will go to hospitals as long as necessary. Because we are all in one trench, the whole Ukraine,” said Svyatoslav Vakarchuk.

About the national idea and life after the war

Also in the interview Natalia Moseychuk and Svyatoslav Vakarchuk talked about the Ukrainian national idea – what it is, about the trip to Kharkiv and Izyum, about how to coexist with the residents of Donetsk and Luhansk, and what will happen after the war.

“You say you have some gift of foresight. Will it be difficult for us not to quarrel after the war?” Moseychuk asked her guest.

“I want to believe that it will be possible. These thousands of deaths that occurred because of the absolute evil that comes from our enemy, they cannot be in vain. We have no right to make it so that later in peacetime someone will tell us: “Look, you have defended your geopolitical independence, but you are losing yourself inside. Then what was it all for?” We have no right to do so. I promise, I – as a musician, as a famous person, as a volunteer – will do everything for this. But the work of all Ukrainians is still needed,” Vakarchuk said.
