From Europe to Ukraine: Ubiennale announces a new open call

The program of the Ukrainian Biennale of Digital and Media Art Ubiennale was presented in Spain this year with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. On November 22, the updated program will be presented in Kyiv, and right now we are recruiting new works by contemporary Ukrainian artists.
VR exhibits, AR projects, video art, and installations by internationally renowned and emerging Ukrainian artists are speaking to the world community about the war in Ukraine, common values, the importance of unity, and countering the invasion of Russian propaganda as part of the Ukrainian Biennale of Digital and Media Art – Ubiennale. After all, if we want to be heard today, we have to speak a modern language, the language of digital art and technology. Its special advantage is not only in its impressive factor, but also in its immersiveness – it completely captures the viewer’s attention and involves them in the artist’s world.
Yuriy Lekh, curator of the MADATAC festival:
“The world needs to see and learn more about modern Ukraine, its culture and figures at artistic events, not just from the news. It is the artistic and cultural expression of artists that helps us to get to know Ukrainians better, to understand and feel the pain they are living with today. This definitely contributes to better empathy and support for Ukrainians in the world. This year’s program included many bright and contemporary works that are worthy of international attention.”
The program featured exhibits by Alevtina Kakhidze, Oksana Chepelyk, Oleh Kharch, Maria Kulikovska, Kai Colt, Oleh Shuplyak, Veronika Cherednychenko, and many others. There were live audiovisual performances by Dmytro Fedorenko and Andriy Kirichenko.
The program was screened not only in Madrid but also in Valencia, where it was accompanied by a series of events and discussions involving the Ukrainian community. For Ukrainians who were forced to leave, this event became an important cultural connection. One day, a special children’s program was even presented, where children could see their native and peaceful Ukraine in VR helmets.
From November 22 to December 3, the Ukrainian Biennale of Digital and Media Art Ubiennale will be presented in Ukraine, at the Kyiv History Museum. Curated by Valeriy Korshunov, the exhibition will also feature new, relevant works by Ukrainian artists who reflect on and comprehend the lives of Ukrainians in the second year of the war.
Valeriy Korshunov, curator of the Ukrainian Biennale of Digital and Media Art:
“It is important for us to keep our finger on the pulse and to be able to show relevant Ukrainian works that reflect on our war. After all, contemporary digital and media art reacts very quickly, and the works we see today are very important for every Ukrainian, as a kind of art therapy that helps to realize and experience trauma. It is equally important to show these works to the world. To find those that can speak figuratively and be accepted by international cultural institutions. We need to provide constant cultural support and the presence of Ukrainian art on all international platforms so that Ukraine is not forgotten but discovered.”
Artists can submit their works to the Ubiennale program by filling out the form here.
