Kyiv Design Week is held simultaneously in Ukraine and Switzerland
From August 31 to September 19, Kyiv Design Week 2023 “Kyiv: City of Changes” will take place in Zurich, Switzerland, as part of Zurich Design Weeks with the support of GIZ , during which Europeans will have the opportunity to get acquainted with contemporary Ukrainian design in all its manifestations.
Design Week is an annual event in the world of design that takes place in the largest capitals of the world, such as Milan, Paris, London, and Dubai. It is considered to be the largest and most respected event in the field of design, as it covers almost two dozen design areas: clothing, furniture, architecture, illustration, and industrial design.
This year Kyiv Design Week will be held for the first time. Due to the full-scale war, the city is not able to host a full-fledged event, and many Ukrainian designers are now forced to work in different European cities. That’s why our colleagues from Zurich Design Weeks came to the rescue and agreed to host Kyiv Design Week in their city.
“This event has long been in the strategic plans of the Design4Ukraine association. First because of COVID-19 and now because of the war, we cannot realize all the ideas in full, but we are still launching such an important event for the country. We are dedicating Kyiv Design Week to the Ukrainian capital because for many centuries Kyiv has been at the crossroads of paths and cultures, remaining the Freedom Square for many generations. The legendary Kyiv continues to inspire us, to dream, to create, to change, even in such a difficult time when a full-scale war is going on in the country,” say the initiators and curators of the event Anastasia Biletska and Yaroslav Belinsky.
Kyiv Design Week will take place simultaneously at different locations in Zurich and Kyiv and will feature graphic, industrial, and collectible design, cyber fashion, art, and various crafts. The main events will take place in Zurich, where exhibitions, discussions, presentations, lectures, documentary screenings, performances, light shows and many other events will be organized at various locations for almost three weeks to remind Europeans about Ukraine and its talents.
In particular, the Projector Institute will show a short film Kyiv’s Design Chronicles in Zurich; MacPaw software company will present a new basic font Fixel; UFEG (Ukrainian Fashion Education Group) will show Roots of the future clothing collection, which explores the fusion of fashion and technology; TheO Wallpaper brand will present Kyiv colors, a palette of interior paint colors that reflect the colors of various architectural objects in the Ukrainian capital; Ukrainian watchmaker ZAVOD will tell the story of the RIDER1991 and REAL TIME watches; and Save Kyiv Modernism and Aspichi will present a VR journey through the architectural objects of the Ukrainian capital’s brutalism.
Several events within Kyiv Design Week will be held in Kyiv, in particular, design fans will be able to attend presentations, design panels and workshops.
