Vivienne Westwood first became famous in the British punk rock scene of the 1970s. She made clothes for the SEX boutique on Kings Road, which she ran with her then husband Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols.
Her early designs were androgynous, with handwritten slogans and deliberate imperfections such as stitched seams and labels on the outside of the garment.
Westwood subsequently became a force in the fashion world, with her collections shown in Paris and London throughout the 1980s. The British woman’s clothes were worn by Marion Cotillard, Pharrell Williams and Princess Eugenie.
Her most iconic contribution to pop culture was Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding dress in the firstSex and theCity movie in 2008.
Westwood was also a well-known political activist, advocating for nuclear disarmament, climate change and civil rights.
