In Ukraine, they want to preserve the cultural heritage damaged by the Russian invaders. For this purpose, a special expert group will be created, which will deal with the protection, preservation and restoration of valuable monuments and buildings.

The corresponding decision was made during the international scientific and practical conference  Cultural heritage in conditions of war: protection, preservation and restoration , which took place on October 26 in Kyiv.

The group will include specialists in the field of cultural heritage protection, human rights defenders, architects, restorers, archaeologists and representatives of the public.

Minister of Culture and Information Policy Kateryna Chuyeva said that today in the regions of Ukraine about a thousand cultural heritage objects and cultural institutions have been damaged, some of which are located in ordinary modern houses. The latest verified figures for today: more than 550 episodes of war crimes by Russian troops against the cultural heritage of Ukraine.

Among the damaged objects, in particular:

  • 171 objects with landmark status,
  • 146 objects of valuable historical buildings,
  • 58 monuments and works of art that are not registered as monuments of cultural heritage (monuments to the heroes of the anti-terrorist operation, mosaics, stained glass windows, etc.),
  • 44 museums.

The participants of the event summarized the practical experience and initiated the creation of a road map for the formation of methodological recommendations for the implementation of measures for the protection, preservation, and restoration of the cultural heritage of Ukraine, which suffered great damage due to the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine. At the same time, there is currently no reliable information about the state of cultural heritage objects located in the temporarily occupied territories.
