The aurora borealis was observed in Ukraine
Ukrainians observed such a rare phenomenon as the aurora borealis on the night of April 24. This was most noticeable for residents of Kyiv region, as well as in a number of other northern regions of the country. The aurora borealis is the result of the collision of charged particles of the solar wind with the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. It was also seen from the side of Belarus.
Residents of Ukraine began actively sharing photos of green and pink glow against the night sky on social media.
Interesting facts about the aurora borealis:
- The Northern Lights can be seen only at night, when the sun goes down. This usually happens from September to March in the north and south of the globe.
- The aurora is caused by the collision of energetic particles from the solar wind with the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. These particles interact with the atoms and molecules of gases, which leads to the emission of light.
- The color of the northern lights depends on which elements the energy particles interact with. For example, green color usually represents oxygen, and purple color represents nitrogen.
- Sometimes the heavenly fire can be so bright that people can read and write by its light.
