UN: women in Ukraine live 10 years longer than men

men and womenA UN report says that women in Ukraine live 10 years longer than men. For example, the average life expectancy for a woman is 78 years, and for a man – 68 years. 

The most common causes of death for men in Ukraine are cardiovascular disease, cancer, injuries, and accidents.

In particular, according to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, in 2020, the largest number of deaths among men (over 60%) were caused by circulatory system diseases, including heart attacks and other heart diseases.

Cancer is also a serious problem for men in Ukraine, including lung, prostate, and stomach cancer.

Accidents and injuries are another common cause of death for men, especially among those under the age of 35.

It is also worth noting that the war in Ukraine has resulted in a significant number of deaths among men. According to the UN, more than 13,000 people have been killed since 2014, most of them men.

Now, according to UN estimates, as of 2023, 36.7 million people live in Ukraine:

  • 64.6% of people aged 15 to 64;
  • 20.2% of people aged 65+;
  • 15.2% of citizens under the age of 14.
