Oleksandr Pedan – what does the TV presenter read?

Oleksandr PedanMore than a year ago, we started to engage in more frequent thoughtscrolling – excessive reading of negative news. This serves as a kind of protection, because it keeps us informed. However, psychologists say that mindscrolling leads to fear, anxiety, and stress. Oleksandr Pedan, host of the New Channel and UniverCheck educational travel projects, is convinced that it is better to be distracted by an interesting and useful book. As part of the project to promote reading, “Reading with Love,” by the New Channel’s Moloda and Yakaboo series, he shared a selection of his favorite works.

“I would not say that this year was a readable one. In fact, it’s easier to focus on the news. But I can assure you that now it is much more useful to read books than to scroll through the news feed all day,” says Oleksandr Pedan. “I am sharing a list of books I have read during the year of war. I advise everyone!”

“History of Ukraine-Rus” by Mykola Arkas

“One of the first objective histories of Ukraine. It was written by a Ukrainian, Mykola Arkas, for his children in an easy classroom form back in the early 1990s. This book is worth reading,” the host explains.

What is the book about?

The popular essay on the history of Ukraine by the artist and public figure Mykola Arkas is a major historiographical monument of the early twentieth century. The author’s goal in creating this book was to present the history of our country in such an accessible form that even an unprepared reader could understand it.

“A Short Course in the History of Ukraine, by Oleksandr Paliy

“If you didn’t learn this subject well at school or, like me, it was taught poorly in the classroom in the early 1990s, then you should start with the Short Course in Ukrainian History. “This is an unrealistically cool book, written in simple language and with the right facts,” Pedan says. “The history of Ukraine is multifaceted and deep. Therefore, you need to read it carefully so as not to overload your brain with the number of princes, hetmans, battles, etc. Moreover, as you read the book in more detail, you will learn about how Muscovy tried to destroy Ukraine, eradicate our language, take away our territories, and appropriate our names. And this is worth knowing for both children and adults.”

What is the book about?

Historian and political consultant Oleksandr Paliy in this unique textbook on the history of Ukraine will tell about its victories and defeats, enemies and heroes, the resilience of its people and attempts to conquer them. The book will give an idea of the most important turns in the historical development of our country.

“The Dance of the Idiot” by Ilarion Pavliuk

“The Dance of the Idiot is a powerful Ukrainian fiction with a lot of psychology, rethinking of oneself, struggle with oneself,” explains the New Channel host, “And this book has an unexpected and twisted plot. Therefore, it is suitable for those who do not shy away from detectives.”

What is the book about?

The protagonist, space biologist Gil, is experiencing unemployment and lack of money. There is also a chance that a fatal hereditary disease will manifest itself. Suddenly, he received an unexpected job offer: a scientific expedition to the planet Ish-Chel. Gil is promised good earnings and minimal risks. But will the decision to fly to a distant and bizarre planet turn out to be the right one?

“Mistress from the Market Square” by Andriy Kokotyukha

“It’s an interesting detective story, and those who like this genre will like it. The author also describes Lviv of those times very well – traditions, life, everyday life, people’s thoughts,” Pedan says.

What is the book about?

Lviv found itself under Russian occupation, and terrible times began for the citizens. Klym Koshovyi comes under mass arrest. But everything changes with the unexpected death of the mistress of an influential Russian officer. Koshovoy has a chance to be released. Together with his partner Josef Shatsky, they are getting closer to the mysterious killer and the secret of the mistress from Rynok Square step by step.

“The Garden of Divine Songs, by Hryhorii Skovoroda

“And in conclusion, I recommend Hryhoriy Skovoroda. At the very least, pay attention to his aphorisms, which contain no less meaning than Chinese wisdom or Japanese hoku,” the New Channel host emphasized.

What is the book about?

The collection of poems by Hryhorii Skovoroda is a kind of diary of the writer. This is how he captured life events and lyrical mood. Skovoroda noted that his “Garden” sprouted “from the seeds of the Holy Scriptures.”
