KharkivDuring the filming of the travelogue “LeMarrutka” on the New Channel, its host Lesya Nikitiuk learned exclusive stories from the Kharkiv subway at the beginning of the full-scale war.

In December 2022, the third season of the travel show LeMarrutka was released on New Channel. The project’s host Lesya Nikitiuk and her team traveled around Ukraine under martial law and met our resilient people. And in February 2023, they set off on a new journey! This time we visited Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions. On Tuesday, March 28, at 20:00, New Channel will show the episode from Kharkiv.

“Kharkiv region is one of the most troubled in Ukraine. Since February 24, 2022, the air raid has sounded more than 1700 times in this region. The longest of them was 17 hours, and the total duration of the air raids was almost 60 days,” says Lesya Nikitiuk. – During the full-scale war, all life in Kharkiv moved underground from the squares and streets. The subway has saved thousands of Kharkiv residents. On February 24, Kharkiv subway trains stopped running, and city residents ran to the station to hide. There were also people who walked a distance of up to 15 kilometers along the subway tracks. They were getting to the train station to leave the city.”

Lesia met with Yulia, the head of the Heroiv Truda station, who told her about the life of the Kharkiv subway in February and March last year.

“On February 24, we had about 1,500 people sleeping overnight, and on February 25, 2,000 or more. And that was just at one station! In general, the Kharkiv subway became home to tens of thousands of city residents,” the woman says. “Some people went down into the subway on February 24 and left only in May, when trains started running. Imagine, some people did not go outside for a month and a half. It was very scary. Psychologists came to us and worked with people, helped them somehow.”

There were also many children of all ages at the Kharkiv subway stations. Volunteers worked with them. Together with the kids, we did physical education, played and drew. The results of the creative work now adorn the columns of the Historical Museum station.

“The station has 14 huge canvases with bright children’s drawings!” says the project’s host. “These are not just drawings, but 3D applications. They depict the dreams, experiences and pain of Kharkiv children.”
