Nadiya Matveeva gave a lot of valuable advice that will help ensure life in wartime in the section “Reliable advice” on STB. We decided to remind you how to act during a nuclear attack

In times of war, it pays to be armed with life-saving information.

Nuclear weapons – how to protect yourself

Remember, a nuclear attack is not a sentence for humanity. It is possible to survive in the vault, even near the epicenter of the explosion. And if you hear a siren and a nuclear strike is confirmed on the radio or television, don’t panic – you’ll have six minutes to take cover. It is during this time that radioactive fallout begins after the explosion.

  • Go to the bomb shelter or the subway faster. An extreme case is the basement of a reinforced concrete building or a parking lot.
  • If there is no shelter nearby, then when you see a flash, fall to the ground, or preferably into a pit or ravine, face down. Pull the hood, jacket or bag over your head, but don’t pull the clothes off other parts of your body – burns are possible. Do not look at the explosion – it can lead to blindness.
  • If you have time, grab a supply of water and food for at least two days. Canned foods and water in glass bottles or cans (hermetically sealed) are better. They remain safe even after a nuclear explosion. But before use, wipe all jars and bottles with a damp cloth to remove possible radioactive dust. After the explosion, it is forbidden to drink rainwater – it is contaminated, boiling will not help.
  • Buy potassium iodide tablets (250 g) in the home medicine cabinet and take them after the explosion. But do it only after the official announcement of the attack in official sources and do not exceed the dose. Do not drink iodine solution or other antiseptics. You should also not drink it for prevention and apply it to the skin.
  • Remember: after the explosion, everything around is contaminated with radioactive dust. In no case do not leave the shelter for at least 48 hours. Better – 8-9 days.
  • Buy respirators, rubber boots, raincoat and gloves in advance. And the radio is on batteries, because the Internet and mobile communication, most likely, will not work.
  • Emergency services will inform you about further action and evacuation. Do not ignore the instructions.
