Online searches for sexual access to Ukrainian women increased significantly after February 24 – data from the media company Thomson Reuters. Most often, women between the ages of 18 and 24 fall into sexual exploitation – data from the International Organization for Migration. Since 2004, this organization has provided assistance to more than 4,000 Ukrainians who suffered from sexual exploitation. However, most of such cases are simply kept silent due to fear.

Iryna Mydlovets , national protection specialist of the Representation of the International Organization for Migration in Ukraine , emphasizes:

“You need to be very prudent and careful and remember a few important rules when you are going to go somewhere. Leave work and home addresses to relatives; formalize the employment relationship. If it doesn’t work, tell in detail where and through whom you found this or that job. Make copies of all documents; come up with a code word – in case of that, use it when talking to relatives on the phone. For example, drink like my cat? And you don’t have a cat at home. Those around don’t guess, but your relatives will immediately understand that you are in trouble.”

Those who have suffered from exploitation or human trafficking, by contacting the hotline number 527, will be able to receive legal or psychological assistance depending on the situation, if necessary – provision of temporary shelter, assistance in employment or retraining, assistance in obtaining or renewing education, financial assistance for satisfaction of basic needs.
