Today, this story is close and familiar to many Ukrainian couples who, for obvious reasons, cannot be together all the time, most of all because of the war in Ukraine.

“When We’re Two” is a song that I wrote in one breath, and it came together in one lonely winter evening when I was missing my family. And at that moment I realized that hundreds of thousands of people, especially those at the front, are going through the same thing. I am friends with many people, we talk about different things, I know their personal stories. And for them, separation from their loved ones is extremely difficult, and the moments when they have the opportunity to meet briefly with their children, wife, husband or loved one are true happiness. And the idea to make a duet and sing together with Nastya (KOLA) came later, when I was on my next trip to the east. The radio was playing quietly in the car, I heard one of Nastia’s songs, and outside the window I could see a small frontline town, cars with military personnel, civilians hurrying about their business, and amidst all this busy life, a couple stood on the roadside embracing each other: he in uniform, she with a small suitcase. I don’t know if they talked about something or just kept silent, if the girl had just arrived or was about to return. But at that moment I realized that When We Are Together is a dialog between two people. And thanks to Nastya for subtly feeling the same thing and making the song sound exactly like this” says Svyatoslav Vakarchuk.
