Eurovision Song Contest 2023: Ukraine in the business cards of the participating countries
On Tuesday, April 11, the details of the creative concept of the business cards of the countries participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 were revealed. This year’s business cards will showcase 111 different locations from Ukraine, the UK, and each of the participating countries. The music for the videos was created by musician and composer Dmytro Shurov (Pianoboy), music producer of the National Selection 2023.
“The postcards, or business cards of the participating countries that you see before the performances, are probably the most musical and responsible work for a composer on the show and the most interesting for me personally. It is important for me that Ukraine is represented as well as possible at such a huge forum as Eurovision – on stage, in the videos, and in the musical design. To do this, we are actively cooperating: a British production company shoots incredible videos, for which I create original music in Kyiv, combining the atmosphere of Ukraine and the UK within the framework of modern sound and picture. Of course, this is a complex process, which is greatly influenced by the events in our country, primarily emotionally. But even in the most disturbing times, we must feel light and have hope. I dream and hope that this year’s Postcards will be one of the best in the history of Eurovision.”Dmytro Shurov (Pianoboy) shared with .
Before the performance of each participant of this year’s competition, the audience will be shown short video business cards. These videos give us an opportunity to get to know the participating artist and the country they represent. This year, innovative drones and 360-degree cameras are being used to shoot the business cards to seamlessly transport viewers between locations in Ukraine, the UK and other participating countries. Each video will feature three locations from each country united by a single theme: parks, castles, street art, beaches, rivers and lakes.
“The creative concept of the business cards is eagerly awaited by the fans of the contest every year. It’s the perfect way to introduce each contestant to a 160 million audience around the world, and I can’t wait for viewers to finally see this year’s realization as we broadcast the semi-finals and grand final. Aside from the fact that the UK, Ukraine and the other countries participating in the competition are united by music, viewers will be surprised to see what else we have in common.”said Rachel Ashdown, BBC Chief Commissioner for Eurovision 2023.
The postcards were produced by Windfall Films, a British company, in cooperation with 23/32 Films, a Ukrainian film company that organized the shooting and secured aerial permits for parts of the postcards with Ukrainian locations. Wherever possible, local film and production crews were engaged to shoot the business cards.
“We are happy to participate in this project and show that filming of any level of complexity is still possible in Ukraine. This year’s Eurovision Song Contest, despite not taking place in Ukraine due to Russian aggression, will have our country in its heart,” said Sara Cherniavska, executive producer at 23/32 Films.
It is worth noting that Ukraine’s representative at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest is the band TVORCHI. They will be performing on stage in Liverpool with an updated version of “Heart of Steel” will be released in May this year. Over the past month, TVORCHI has been actively participating in the promotional tour before the contest: the band has already performed on the stage of the Barcelona Eurovision Party and Israel Calling 2023. On April 15, TVORCHI will perform the song “Heart of Steel” on the stage of the Eurovision in Concert promo concert in Amsterdam.
