The European Broadcasting Union has received the 2023 Changemaker Award from the International Broadcasting Convention for the contribution of the Eurovision Song Contest, the world’s largest music event, to society and culture.

The award was given in recognition of the significant social and cultural impact of Eurovision and its commitment to technological and digital innovation that promotes unity, diversity and inclusion through the power of music.

“Over the years, this competition has caused numerous positive changes in the world of broadcasting technologies and in society as a whole. It has been a launching pad for innovations in the field of television and radio broadcasting since representatives of the participating countries first took the stage in 1956. “Eurovision has become a catalyst for social change in a divided world, uniting European countries and beyond in their pursuit of the musical dream,” the jury of the International Broadcasting Convention noted. – When war-torn Ukraine was unable to host the competition in May 2023, and the United Kingdom, which had taken second place in 2022, became its host, it was a significant manifestation of solidarity between nations. The 2023 Changemaker Award symbolizes positive change – in the world of television, radio and entertainment and beyond – and there could not be a more deserving winner.”

The award was presented to Martin Osterdahl, Executive Director of Eurovision.

“Technology and innovation are an integral part of the DNA of Eurovision, and have permeated every aspect of the contest since its inception in 1956. At its core, the contest has always sought to bring together viewers from different countries to celebrate our diversity. From the vibrant stage design to the perfect audiovisual production, cutting-edge technology allows us to connect millions of viewers around the world through music and three spectacular shows. We are proud of the impact that the Eurovision Song Contest continues to have by entertaining audiences, discovering new artists and showing that in this ever-divided world, we are all united by music,” said Martin Osterdahl.

The Eurovision Song Contest plays an important role in achieving social and cultural progress by promoting inclusiveness and acceptance. Through its commitment to fostering an atmosphere of respect and understanding, the competition has become a catalyst for change – developing broadcasting technology, challenging stereotypes and supporting diverse genres of music from all over Europe and Australia.
